UK theme for World AIDS Day: 'TOGETHER WE CAN!'

The World AIDS Day theme for the UK is 'TOGETHER WE CAN!' and it will be promoted throughout the UK in the lead up to 1st December. This UK theme has been developed from the official global theme of 'Universal Access and Human Rights', and it examines the reality of HIV and the need for a collaborative effort to end HIV related stigma and discrimination.

Here in the UK a key focus is on upholding the 'Human Rights' dimension of the global theme. There are currently an estimated 80,000 people living with HIV and AIDS in the UK. HIV-related stigma and discrimination directed at these individuals not only makes it more difficult for them to come to terms with and manage their illness on a personal level, but it also interferes with attempts to fight the AIDS epidemic as a whole.

The new 2009 World AIDS Day resources range highlights the need for HIV-related stigma and discrimination to end. 'TOGETHER WE CAN!' is a carefully designed range of resources aimed at educating the public around HIV and AIDS issues, whilst continuing to raise awareness through the Red Ribbon.
